Suspension is the event every company in this category would rather discuss after you have signed. It is worth understanding before, because it is the single risk that can interrupt a store regardless of how well it has been built.
What Happens If Amazon Suspends Your Store?
Selling privileges stop, pending payouts are typically held, and the store cannot sell until the issue is resolved through Amazon's appeal process. Your inventory does not disappear and your account history does not vanish, but revenue stops for an unknown period while the appeal runs. No company can promise you this will never happen, and any company that does has told you something useful about itself.
Suspension Is Not One Thing
The word covers several different events with very different severity, and they get collapsed together in conversation.
- A listing takedown. One ASIN is removed. The rest of the store keeps selling. Common, usually administrative, often resolved quickly.
- An account health warning. No selling interruption yet, but a metric has crossed a threshold. This is the stage where intervention matters most.
- A full account suspension. Selling privileges are removed across the store. This is what people mean when they say suspension.
- A funds reserve or disbursement hold. Can accompany any of the above. Money owed to the account stays with Amazon until the matter is closed.
The distinction matters because the first two are routine and the third is not. A management company that treats a listing takedown as a crisis is inexperienced. One that treats an account health warning as routine is worse.
What Commonly Causes It
Amazon publishes its policies, and the causes are not mysterious. The ones that affect wholesale storefronts most often:
- Intellectual property complaints. A brand or rights holder asserts that a listing infringes. This can happen even where the goods are authentic, and resolving it usually means producing documentation of the supply chain.
- Inauthentic or condition complaints. Customers or Amazon's systems flag goods as not matching the listing. Invoices from the supplier are the standard remedy.
- Account health metrics. Order defect rate, late shipment, cancellation rate. Mostly mitigated by fulfilling through Amazon FBA, where Amazon controls shipping.
- Policy violations. Including the dropshipping policy, which is worth reading in full if you are evaluating any company in this space.
- Verification and documentation requests. Amazon periodically asks accounts to re-verify identity, address, or banking details. Failure to respond promptly can itself trigger a suspension.
The last one causes more avoidable suspensions than most people expect, and it is the one that requires you, the account holder, to act.
What Happens to Your Money
This is the part people most want a clean answer to, and the honest version has edges.
Funds already disbursed to your bank are yours and are not affected. Funds still sitting in the Amazon account at the time of suspension are typically held. Amazon's published practice is to hold the balance while the account is under review, and to release it after the review concludes, subject to any deductions for refunds, chargebacks, and claims.
How long that takes is not something anyone can quote you a number for. It depends on the nature of the issue and the quality of the appeal. Plan on the assumption that money in the account at the moment of suspension is not money you can access on a schedule.
What Happens to Your Inventory
Inventory held in Amazon FBA warehouses remains yours. It stops selling, and it continues to accrue storage fees while it sits.
You generally retain the ability to create removal orders and have the stock shipped to you or to a prep center, though this can be restricted depending on the nature of the suspension. Inventory that cannot sell and cannot move is the quiet cost of a long suspension, and it is a reason that suspensions are expensive even when they are eventually resolved in your favor.
This is also why the sourcing model matters so much. Goods bought from brands and authorized distributors come with invoices. Invoices are what an appeal is built from.
How Reinstatement Works
The process is standardized and it is documentary rather than conversational.
- Amazon states the reason. The notice identifies the policy or metric at issue, though not always in useful detail.
- You submit a Plan of Action. This states the root cause, the immediate corrective action, and the preventive measures. It is a written document and its quality determines the outcome more than anything else.
- Supporting documentation is attached. Supplier invoices, authorization letters, and shipping records, depending on the issue.
- Amazon reviews. Timelines vary and are not published.
- Reinstatement, further information requests, or denial. Denials can be appealed again.
Nobody can guarantee a reinstatement, and you should be suspicious of anyone who offers to. What a competent operator can offer is that the documentation exists, the appeal is written properly, and it is submitted quickly.
What It Means for a Performance Guarantee
If you are evaluating a managed store arrangement with a performance guarantee attached, suspension is the event most likely to interact with it. Ask specifically how.
In our case, a suspension pauses the clock on the guarantee period rather than voiding the guarantee, and the period resumes after reinstatement. The full terms, including every condition attached, are written out in our earnings disclaimer.
Ask any company you are considering the same question, and ask for the answer in writing. A guarantee that goes silent on suspension is a guarantee that has not been thought through.
What Reduces the Risk
Suspension risk cannot be eliminated. It can be structurally reduced, and the structure is visible before you commit.
- Documented sourcing. Wholesale purchasing from brands and authorized distributors produces the invoices an appeal requires. Arrangements that cannot produce an invoice chain are exposed.
- Owning the inventory. Being the seller of record with goods you purchased is the position Amazon's policies are written around.
- FBA fulfillment. Hands shipping performance to Amazon, which removes a category of metric-based risk.
- Responsive account administration. Verification requests answered quickly, by someone who sees them.
- Conservative category selection. Some categories carry materially higher IP complaint rates than others.
What to Ask Before You Commit
These are the questions worth putting to any company in this category, including us.
- Who writes and submits the Plan of Action, and have they done it before?
- Can you produce supplier invoices for every unit in the store, on request, today?
- What happens to my fees during a suspension?
- Does a suspension pause, void, or have no effect on the guarantee?
- If the account is suspended permanently, what is my recourse?
That last question is the one that separates answers. It has no comfortable response, and how a company handles an uncomfortable question in writing tells you how it will handle one on the phone.

FAQ
How likely is a suspension?
There is no published industry rate, and anyone quoting you one is estimating. What can be said is that the sourcing model and the fulfillment method materially change the exposure, and both are visible before you commit.
Do I lose my inventory?
No. Inventory in FBA remains yours and can generally be removed, though it stops selling and continues to accrue storage fees during the suspension.
How long does reinstatement take?
Amazon does not publish timelines and they vary considerably by issue type. Treat any specific promise about duration as a claim the company cannot actually control.
Can a store be suspended permanently?
Yes. Appeals can be denied and denials can be upheld. This is a real risk in this category and it should be priced into your decision rather than argued away.
Who is responsible if the suspension was caused by the management company?
That depends entirely on what your agreement says. Read the liability and indemnity sections before signing, and have your own attorney read them too.
